Flood Control -
Cob, brick and flint cottage
This cob brick and flint cottage flooded nearly every year.
Trial pits as shown in the photo revealed
that the water table was just below
the floor level.
A local drainage scheme was implemented
to remove surface water. The cavity
drain system and drainage was installed
to remove water coming up through
floors and the wall floor join and
away to pumps.
Many conservationists will argue
against the use of modern materials
in historic buildings but given the
opportunity to put forward
alternative methods to save this
beautiful cottage from further
damage they were unable to present a
single idea given the severity of
the problem. The membrane is
detailed so as moisture can
evaporate unhindered from the cob
walls. Historic wattle and daub walls were
treated repaired and re daubed with
local soil and chalk daub then plastered
with a lime putty mortar.
